I am excited to be sharing something new to me in the nail world: water based nail polish from Suncoat Products. As a self-professed nail polish nerd, I am so excited to see a more natural alternative for those who want to paint their nails without all the chemicals in "regular" nail polish. Yingchun Liu is the Founder and Chief Chemist for Canadian-made Suncoat Products; she was inspired to create a more natural nail polish when her young daughters started showing an interest in nail polish. I love the story behind this product as well as the fact that it's Canadian made! I was sent a few different products from the Suncoat line, including water based nail polish, peelable nail polish and plant based nail polish remover. Suncoat Classic Water Based Nail Polish (11ml, $12 CAD) is a revolutionary formula containing ~70% water. An environmentally friendly alternative, Suncoat is not tested on animals, does not discolour nails, virtually odour-free, non-flammable, vegan, mineral pigments and natural colourants. It doesn’t contain formaldehyde, toluene, acetates, phthalate or alcohol. Shown below are Poppy Red and Lilac with the Suncoat Base/Top Coat.
The Peelables Super Natural Mineral Nail Polish (11ml, $12 CAD) is an uniquely formulated, water-based odourless, eco-friendly, peel away nail polish. These are a great option for those who like to change up their polish a lot or children as there is no remover required at all.
My experience with Suncoat Products Nail Polish:
I wore two of the Classic Water Based Suncoat Polishes in Lilac and Poppy Red. Both of these shades had a pretty shimmer and wore well. In fact, it was hard to get them off! I used both the Plant Based Nail Polish Remover and acetone but I found the Plant Based Remover worked most effectively. I had no issues with the longevity of the products when worn with the Suncoat Base/Top Coat. In terms of application, you really have no choice but to use very thin coats. Because the nail polish is water based, the formula is very, very thin. You barely need any product on your brush or else the polish will pool and run. Secondly, let the polish dry for about 3 minutes between each coat. Both shades looked best after they had fully dried down and adding additional coats did not make a huge difference in terms of opacity. I would also recommend using the Suncoat Base/Top Coat because it did help to even out the nail polish colour but it kind of clouds the polish as it has a milky finish. If you're used to conventional nail polishes, it will take some getting used to in terms of application but if you follow my recommendations then I think you'll be very impressed.
Suncoat Plant Based Nail Polish Remover (150ml, $15 CAD) is a plant-based nail polish remover made from corn stock fermentation and enriched with vitamin E. It removes all nail polishes, water-based and conventional. It has an oil like consistency and will not dry or discolour nails. The plant based remover is biodegradable and vegan.
2-in-1 Nail Polish Remover Gel & Cuticle Balm (50ml remover + 2g balm, $14 CAD) is a compact tube containing remover gel and cuticle balm. Made from plant-based natural ingredients and free of petrochemicals, this natural nail polish remover gel removes all nail polishes, water-based and conventional. It will not dry or discolour your nails. The Cuticle Balm contains vegetable oils, wax and is enriched with vitamin E. No animal testing, no animal ingredients and 100% vegan friendly.
My review and experience with Suncoat Nail Polish Removers:
I liked both of the nail polish removers! Especially the fact that they're biodegradable and plant-based. There is a scent to the removers which is a bit off-putting but knowing that it's safer than acetone is reassuring. I preferred the Plant Based Nail Polish Remover in the pump over the gel. For the gel, you apply the gel all over the nail (I would suggest liberally), leave on for two minutes and then remove with a cotton ball. With the Plant Based Remover, it's a simple pump onto a cotton ball and then a bit of scrubbing to remove the polish. The remover has a bit of an oily residue but it actually helps to moisturize the nail. It worked well with both conventional nail polishes as well as the Suncoat Products. I can see myself using this regularly to remove manicures as it is better for the environment than acetone.
Overall, the Suncoat Products I tried are a great option for those who want a safer and environmentally friendly option when it comes to painting their (or their children's) nails. The Suncoat Plant Based Nail Polish Remover was a standout for me as it worked well with both conventional and water based nail polishes. I have a few friends who are hesitant to paint their nails because of all the chemicals in conventional nail polish so I will definitely be recommending Suncoat Products to them as an alternative.
