It's always a good day when I get to try a new indie nail polish brand. Today I am sharing the debut releases from Popcorn Polish, a French-Canadian nail polish brand, based in Quebec, Canada. The brand officially launched in August 2020 with three collections, all of which I have today on the blog as well as live swatches on the Streets Ahead Style YouTube channel.
Popcorn Polish is a brand created by fellow nail polish lovers who wanted to try their hand at creating fun nail polishes. As self-described DYI-ers, the creators behind Popcorn Polish decided to create their own brand of nail polish to share with the world. I love the colours they chose for their initial releases. It's very fun and bright. As for the name, they chose Popcorn Polish because they have a really strong love (yes, love) for popcorn. Emilie explains, "we enjoy evening snacks and we have salty tastes, so popcorn is one of our favorite snacks." I can't disagree there!
Let's get into the polish, why don't we. A note about the bottle. I found the shape of this bottle to be awkward to work with. The formulas tended to be on the thin side and the brush has a very long neck which resulted in the polish running down the neck of the brush and pooling on my nails. It meant I had to work in very thin coats which resulted in me always needing three coats. Emilie has mentioned in the future they will switch to a round bottle with a regular brush length which should help with application. In terms of wear time, the Popcorn Polish formula held up well over 5-6 days. No chipping and minimal tip wear. I was impressed with the wear time but the application left much to be desired overall.
Popcorn Polish Melted Butter ($12 CAD | 15 mL | 3 coats) is a light yellow pastel creme polish. I like this shade of yellow and I found the formula to be typical of yellow cremes. It needed three coats to build up and top coat helped to even everything out.
Popcorn Polish It's Better With Butter ($12 CAD | 15 mL | 3 coats) is a bright yellow creme. This one also needed three coats and the formula was very sheer. It was almost a crelly but I think it's just a very sheer creme. No staining to report with this polish.
Popcorn Polish Space Cadet ($12 CAD | 15 mL | 2 coats) is a blue crelly filled with blue, pink and purple glitters. I love the colour of this base and it only needed two coats for opacity. However, I found the glitters to be very thirsty and I needed two coats of top coat to smooth it out. Also, I think the base overpowered the glitters a little too much but overall this is one of the top polishes in the 11 I tried.
Popcorn Polish Lights Out ($12 CAD | 15 mL | 3 coats) is a medium purple creme. This polish is a very pretty shade of purple and I had no issues with staining. I thought this was one of the better performing cremes in the collection but I still found it hard to work with the brush.
Popcorn Polish Get Together ($12 CAD | 15 mL | 2 coats) is a pink nail polish with blue, red and purple glitters. This is like Space Cadet where the base overpowered the glitters. I couldn't really see the blue or purple glitters at all but it is a very pretty pink and the formula applied well in two coats. The topcoat smoothed this out in just one coat.
Popcorn Polish Cinema ($12 CAD | 15 mL | 3 coats) is a teal creme polish. I found this creme to be the most challenging in the bunch. It took a long time to dry between coats and was somehow very sheer. I found it dragged when I applied top coat which never really happens for me. I like the colour but the application was not ideal.
Popcorn Polish Cafe de Flore ($12 CAD | 15 mL | 3 coats) is a dusty spring green pastel creme. I love this colour of green and I generally don't like greens! So that's saying something. The formula on this was better than the last. I needed three coats to build it up as it was sheer but it was even and smooth.
And now we are onto the Topper on Top Collection which can be purchased for
$44 CAD or individually. These toppers are very sparse and tend to be a little base heavy. If you're okay with a very minimal topper then these would do the trick but I wouldn't recommend building them up as the base is too thick and heavy for that. And you still need top coat to smooth them out.
What do you think of Popcorn Polish? I would have to say my favourite polish is Popcorn Polish Café de Flore because it's such a unique green and then Popcorn Polish Get Together is a close second because pink!
